I am a fan of baseball and road trips. The new expansion team in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) checks off both items.
The Sylvan Lake Gulls begin their inaugural season in the WCBL on Friday May 28th in Lethbridge. Their home opener is scheduled on Friday June 11 against those same Lethbridge Bulls. I will be cashing in at least two of my flex pack vouchers to be in attendance for that game.
Here’s the explanation of the Gulls flex pack provided by their General Manager Aqil Samuel:
With that explained, here is a list of their home games to be played at the still being constructed Pogadl Park. Whether your preference is Facebook or Twitter, the Gulls do a wonderful job keeping fans up-to-date with progress pictures of the stadium.
The Gulls smartly created a Facebook Album called “Meet Your Gulls” to catalogue their signings. Using Zachary Olson, no relation to the former Edmonton Prospect Tony Olson, and Brayden Cust here are two examples of the social media player cards:
Per the Gulls Twitter account:
Reading about the home run prowess of these players I asked their GM about the dimensions of their park. I asked if it was going to stat killing like the 420 feet to dead center in Edmonton or batter friendly like the 300ish feet down the lines at Brooks? His response, “330 down the lines, 400 dead center“.
The WCBL season was postponed in 2020 due to Covid and this writer likes to believe the Albertans and Canadians will take the correct measures to have sports be able to return strong and proud come this spring. The league will still be down two teams, previously planned hiatuses for the Yorkton Cardinals and Melville Millionaires and will feature an unique situation in Edmonton. As the Prospects await their new park to built in Spruce Grove, they will play the season on the road.
A friendly reminder that your current champions are the divisional rival Okotoks Dawgs. Your first chance to see them live in Sylvan Lake is Saturday July 10th.
That first hot dog and cold beverage is going to be so awesome. Stay healthy everyone.
