Mid-February FC Edmonton Check-in (and who is seemingly checking out)

With the recent signings of Tomas Giraldo and Tobias Warschewski, FC Edmonton’s 2021 roster is now at 19 “standard contracts” plus their two draft picks in Thomas Gardner and Jackson Farmer. The cover photo supplied by Martikinen Sugar Fingers Siembiwskiey shows an unofficial depth chart as a visual aid for Eddies fans.

In case you missed the press releases on the above signings, here’s the burger and cider (they don’t sell meat and potatoes at Clarke) report on each player:

…midfielder Tomas Giraldo on loan from Club de Foot Montreal… he’ll spend the entire 2021 CPL season with Edmonton…17-year-old native of Colombia…came up through Montreal’s academy system and signed his first professional contract with the senior team ahead of the 2020 MLS campaign. He has yet to make an appearance in MLS…a part of the Canadian side that participated at the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship in Florida and the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. SOURCE

…German youth international forward Tobias Warschewski…23, made his professional debut at age 18 with German 3. Liga side Preußen Münster where he emerged as a starter, scoring four goals in 27 matches…over 40 appearances for Münster’s first team…last with German fourth-tier club Phönix Lübeck…scored once in five games before COVID-19 delays and stoppages ended his solid run. The Canadian Premier League (CPL) roster limit is 23. Presuming the Club will keep spots 22 and 23 available for their draft picks to battle for, there appears to only be two (possibly three depending on how bullish you are on Gardner and Farmer) “uncontested” spots available. The meaning of uncontested is with a contract for the 2021 season and not just a tryout for a contract.

That friends is interesting because fan favourite names like Tomi Ameobi and Hanson Boakai remain unsigned. Per the Eddies Bio on Tomi, “Ameobi is the second all-time leading goal scorer in Eddies history and third in appearances“. Boakai was the youngest player to play in the Eddies former league (NASL) and his return ahead of last season was well received by fans.

Duran Lee (01-28-20) and Erik Zetterberg (02-05-20) were signed to the Eddies a calendar year ago. FC Edmonton Academy product Prince Amanda is on the outside looking. A personal favourite of mine in Yong-Chan Son also awaits a phone call which more and more looks like it will not be coming from an Edmonton office. Will any of these players get the call to return?

The roster rebuild in Edmonton this off-season has produced names like Shamit Shome, Fraser Aird, Kyle Porter and Sharly Mabussi. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction meaning now it is time to start seeing who is not returning. Another personal favourite in Kareem Moses announced his own departure while Keven Aleman will suit up for Valour FC this upcoming season.

Chips were going to fall after a win-less “Island Games” experience. It was no secret that the Eddies new management duo of Eric Newendorp and Alan Koch had to raise the level of talent on the Club. Has enough been done?

The bigger question is will we be able to find out the answer to that question as the shadow of Covid still looms large over the sports world. I’d like to think we will see live Eddies action at Clarke Stadium. I like to believe the Club will be jockeying for position in the upper half of the CPL standings.
