Allow me to answer the first question you might have. The St. Albert Impact Women’s Football Club (WFC) is the newest team in the United Women’s Soccer (UWS) league. The Impact FC Club will celebrate their two month birthday on March 6th. The UWS was founded in 2015.
The beautiful game of soccer extends beyond the play on the pitch and goes into the stands where Supporters Group faithful create an electric atmosphere. Now before setting foot into the Club’s home park of Riel Recreation Park, hopefully in May or June pandemic allowing, the build to that electric atmosphere gets turbocharged on Thursday March 11th!
The official press release –
Meet St. Albert Impact WFC players and local women’s soccer supporters
A small group of dedicated women’s soccer supporters in the Edmonton area have thrown their support behind the St. Albert Impact FC, the latest Canadian franchise in the United Women’s Soccer league (UWS).
The group, which is still looking for a name, formed quickly when the announcement about the UWS expansion was made in January 2021.
“This feels like a dream come true. For several years we’ve watched Calgary Foothills WFC have incredible success down south, and have been waiting and hoping for a team to start in the Edmonton region. Now it’s finally here, and we’re thrilled to have a team of our own to cheer for,” says Jess Cooreman, women’s soccer supporter and co-host of the women’s soccer podcast, For Kicks.
On March 11, 2021 at 7 p.m. MT, the group will host an online player Q&A event in partnership with St. Albert Impact FC and CFN Media. Their hope is to help the community get to know the team ahead of their inaugural season, which takes place between May and July. The event will feature Olivia Chu, Erika Vecchio, and Kayla Evans who will chat about their playing experiences, careers, and what they hope for the Impact’s first UWS season. Participants will have a chance to engage with the players and win St. Albert Impact WFC gear.
Attendees are asked to register in advance for the event. Everyone who registers will receive a confirmation email with information about how to join. (Click HERE to register)
“Right now the group is looking for others who care about the women’s game and the growth of soccer in Canada in general,” says Katie Woodfine, the other co-host of For Kicks. “Success of the Canadian women’s national team and the NWSL has a lot of people really excited about women’s soccer, but professional growth of the game here is slow. We weren’t expecting a UWS team. But now that we have them, we want to bolster them however we can. It’s really just about having a good time and lifting this team and this sport up.”
The supporter group has put out a call for anyone who is interested in getting involved to get in touch. Find them on Twitter and Instagram, @impact_sg.
The UWS is a second-division pro-am women’s soccer league and the highest level of women’s soccer in Canada.
